Strengthening Resilience to Build National Character among Teachers and Students of the Indonesian Consulate General in Kinabalu, Malaysia

Malaysia, 2024 – The Directorate of Research and Community Service of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta conducted a resilience strengthening workshop to build national character through Community Service funding under the International Collaboration scheme, led by Prof. Dr. Siti Irene Astuti Dwiningrum, M.Si., with team members Prof. Dr. Samsul Hadi, M.Pd., M.T., and Siti Luzviminda Harum Pratiwi Setyawan, M.T. The program was held from June 9 to June 16, 2022, at Sekolah Indonesia Kota Kinabalu, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kota Kinabalu, Community Learning Centers in Sabah, and Universiti Sabah.

As part of efforts to strengthen resilience and build national character among teachers and students, the Community Service team collaborated with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Siti Irene Astuti Dwiningrum, M.Si. The training applied the “River of Life” method, which encouraged teachers and students to reflect on their past experiences and personal journeys. The sessions for students focused on strengthening key resilience aspects, identifying keys to success in life, providing and receiving constructive feedback from peers, and reflecting on past experiences. Meanwhile, the sessions for teachers emphasized emotional regulation, impulse control, optimism, empathy, and causal analysis.

This resilience program was conducted at Sekolah Indonesia Kota Kinabalu with the goal of supporting Indonesian children born and raised in Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia, in fulfilling their right to quality education. The program also aimed to inspire them to pursue their aspirations and contribute to the development of Indonesia in the future.
